Oxford faces trial over Indian-origin student's lawsuit


London: In a landmark ruling, the UK Supreme Court has ordered OxfordUniversity to stand trial after an Indian-origin student filed a 1 million pound ($1,245,100) compensation claim saying "appalling bad and boring tuition" in the varsity resulted in him getting a second class degree, a newspaper here reported.
Faiz Siddiqui, a modern history graduate, says he would have enjoyed a career as a top international commercial lawyer had he not been held back for obtaining a 2:1 grade when graduating in June 2000, reported the Daily Mail on Sunday.
He later trained as a solicitor, but says his life and career have been blighted by his failure to obtain a first class degree while at the university's Brasenose College.
The 38-year-old is suing Oxford University saying the tuition he received was "negligent", especially on a specialist subject course on Indian imperial history during his final year.
The university then applied to the high court to strike out the claim branding it "hopelessly bad" and "time barred'.
But in a newly-released 18-page judgement, Justice Brian Francis Kerr ruled that the university has a case to answer and that a trial should take "as soon as possible."
And if Siddiqui's case is successful, it could pave the way for thousands of other students to launch similar claims about universities up and down the country, with many of them charging large amount of money in tuition fees.
Professor Alan Smithers, education expert at Buckingham University said: "In the past, universities have been quite cavalier about the quality of their teaching. If Siddiqui wins, it will open the door to other students who do not think they got the degree they deserved because of issues about the teaching they received."
At a previous hearing, the university admitted that it had "difficulties" teaching Asian history in the year Siddiqui graduated, because more than half of the faculty teaching staff were on sabbatical leave at the same time.
Siddiqui said the standard of tuition he received suffered as a result of the "intolerable" pressure the "eminent historian" was under.
As a result of which, Siddiqui said he "underachieved significantly", causing his overall course grade to bomb.

Anna Univ to introduce CBCS in its affiliated colleges

COIMBATORE: After successfully implementing the choice-based credit system (CBCS) in four campuses, Anna University is likely to introduce the system in its affiliated colleges from 2017-18. The university has drafted the syllabus for all courses and if it gets a vice-chancellor by February 2017, then the system is most likely to be introduced as per schedule, officials said.

Latest update .TNPSC to conduct exams for 3,781 posts

The Tamilnadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) has announced that it will be conducting 26 types of tests this year and two in 2018 to fi ll up 3,781 posts in the State.
According to a press note from the Commission, the announcement regarding Assistant Agricultural Officer test will be out in the second week of March. The test for a total of 326 posts will be held on 16 July. The announcement regarding Group 2-A exams for 682 posts will appear in the first week of April and the exam will be conducted on 6 August, it said.
The announcement for Village Administrative Officer (VAO) posts will be out in the fi rst week of June and the test for 494 posts will be conducted on 17 September. While the announcement for posts of Assistant Director of Horticulture will appear in the second week of August, the test for 199 posts will be conducted on 26 November.
The announcement regarding Group 4 exam for 1,788 posts will appear in the second week of September and the exam will be conducted on 7 January 2018. The release also stated that change in the announcement or exam dates due to unavoidable circumstance is also a possibility.

Water crisis forces Anna University to advance exams, end semester early

CHENNAI: Struggling to meet the demand from thousands of staff and student residents after being hit by one of the worst water crises in years, Anna University has decided to advance semester exams by a month to wind up the session before the crisis peaks in summer. From this week, Saturdays would be working days so as to finish the syllabus and wrap up the semester early.
“Due to the failure of monsoon in Chennai, it has been approved to squeeze the… semester by conducting classes on all Saturdays from 28th January ” read a circular issued by the university. Following this, the semester exams would be held in April — a month earlier than usual, an official from the university told Express.
“We plan to finish the semester exams by the second week of April for the final semesters — 4, 6 and 8 — while they would be wound up by the end of April for the first, second and third semesters,” the official added.
The 37 hostels on the university’s four campuses house 7,500 students — besides staff — and require about eight lakh litres of water a day. Three lakh litres are supplied to the hostels and three lakh to the staff quarters. The rest is supplied to departments, for use in labs and classrooms, said Prof VK Stalin, estate officer of the university.


However, with the water in city reservoirs dwindling to alarming levels, Chennai Metro Water has reduced the supply to five lakh litres a day. Used to getting water round-the-clock, hostel residents now receive it only from 5.30 - 9.30 am and from 5:30 - 6:30 pm.
“It is getting increasingly difficult. For emergency needs, the workers fill tanks in the toilets that have a capacity of just 300 - 500 litres,” said a student seeking anonymity.
Among the four campuses, the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), AC Tech and School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) receive water from Metro Water, while the fourth, Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), depends on groundwater, which, however, is fast depleting.
The university currently spends between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 4 lakh a month to procure water through private water tankers. This has caused financial constraints, said a university official. This crisis has begun even before the summer season, which will peak in May. “This has led to the decision to finish the syllabus as early as possible,” said university registrar S Ganesan.
